GOOGLE ACQUIRES ZAGAT

According to Nina and Tim Zagat’s blog, Zagat — the popular restaurant guide that has been around for more than 32 years– has been acquired by Google. As Google continues to focus on local search results and services, the move is a brilliant one, as Zagat has a rich database of local reviews and ratings.

“This may be the most important announcement in our 32 years of business: We have been acquired by another great company, Google. Nina and I will continue to be active in the business as co-Chairs; however, the merger of our resources, expertise and platforms with those of Google will give us the opportunity to greatly expand. We have spent enough time with Google senior management to know that they fully share our belief in user-generated content, and our commitment to accuracy and fairness in providing consumers with the information necessary to make smart decisions about where to eat, travel and shop.” state Nina and Tim Zagat…

“Moving forward, Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering–delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights, while enabling people everywhere to find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences around the corner and around the world,” Marissa Mayer, vice president of local, maps and location services, said on the Official Goggle blog post.

FIRST LOOK AT FIFTY FIVE IN MIDTOWN

In the next year, Sammy Benmoha, son of Roxy Delicatessen owner Joseph, plans to open three restaurants in the Times Square vicinity — one of them (on 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues) will be helmed by an unnamed Food Network personality. This Wednesday, he and his partner Richie Romero (a promoter who once worked at the elder Benmoha’s Club USA) will open the first of those venues, Fifty Five.

ADIOS GONZALEZ Y GONZALEZ

I have spent a large part of my life shopping and dining in SOHO and NOHO alike. So like everyone else at some point or another you have eaten at Gonzalez Y Gonzalez. You know the Mexican spot that has the huge neon sombrero out front on Broadway, yup that one. Well they are closing after 22 years! So sad to see them go; but they aren't going quietly. Next Monday they will have 7 hours of live salsa music so go bid farewell and have one last margarita.
